How to Get Udyam / MSME Registration in India

Udyam Registration is the single, self-declaration based online process through which proprietorships, partnerships, LLPs, companies, and other enterprises formally register as a Micro, Small, or Medium Enterprise (MSME) in India. It replaced the older Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum and physical MSME certificate systems, and in 2026 it remains the entry point for accessing priority-sector lending from banks and NBFCs, Collateral-free credit guarantee schemes, delayed-payment protection under the MSMED Act, government tenders reserved for MSMEs, and various central and state subsidy schemes. Because classification as Micro, Small, or Medium is derived automatically from investment in plant & machinery/equipment and annual turnover figures pulled from PAN and GST filings, keeping those filings current before you begin materially reduces errors. The registration itself has no application fee and, for most applicants, results in an instantly generated Udyam Registration Number (URN) followed by an emailed certificate. Enterprises that were registered under the earlier Udyog Aadhaar or EM-II systems are required to have migrated to Udyam; if you still operate on an old certificate, treat this guide as your migration checklist as well.

Before you start

  • Valid Aadhaar Number of the Proprietor, Managing Partner, or Karta (for HUF); for companies/LLPs, the Aadhaar of an authorized signatory
  • PAN Card of the business entity and of the individual applicant (mandatory for all entity types since the portal moved to PAN-linked verification)
  • GSTIN if your enterprise is required to register under GST law; otherwise select 'Not Applicable' rather than leaving it blank
  • Bank account details (account number and IFSC) for the business's current or operating savings account
  • Mobile number linked to the applicant's Aadhaar, since OTP authentication is the only verification method used
  • Basic investment figures for plant & machinery or equipment (net of land and building), sourced from your latest audited or provisional balance sheet
  • Latest available turnover figure, ideally reconciled with your GST returns or ITR for the relevant financial year
  • NIC (National Industrial Classification) activity code(s) describing your business, or a clear description so you can pick the closest match on the portal

Step-by-step

  1. Access the Official Udyam Portal

Navigate directly to udyamregistration.gov.in — the only official government portal for this registration — and select 'For New Entrepreneurs who are not Registered yet as MSME'. Avoid third-party lookalike sites that mimic the government portal's design; they often charge unnecessary fees for a process that is free.

    • Use a desktop or laptop where possible; some fields render awkwardly on mobile browsers.
    • Keep your Aadhaar-linked mobile phone within reach for OTP entry.
  2. Enter Aadhaar Number for OTP Authentication

Enter the 12-digit Aadhaar number of the proprietor, managing partner, or authorized signatory, along with the applicant's name exactly as it appears on the Aadhaar card. An OTP is sent to the mobile number linked to that Aadhaar; enter it to proceed.

No physical Aadhaar copy is uploaded at this stage — the portal validates identity through the UIDAI database directly, so mismatches between the name typed and the Aadhaar record are a common reason for OTP failures.

  3. Complete PAN Verification

The system prompts for the applicant's PAN, followed by the entity's PAN if you are registering a partnership, LLP, or company. Verification is done against the Income Tax Department database.

For entities other than a proprietorship, this step is now effectively mandatory and blocks progress until PAN details are validated, so ensure your business PAN is active and correctly linked before starting.

  4. Fill in Business and Owner Details

Enter your enterprise name exactly as it appears on your trade license, GST registration, or incorporation certificate, along with the official business address, type of organization, and date of commencement of business.

The portal auto-fetches some PAN-linked details; review these carefully, since discrepancies here can later complicate loan applications or tender submissions that cross-reference your Udyam certificate.

  5. Add GSTIN and Bank Details

If your business is registered under GST, enter the GSTIN so the portal can pull turnover data automatically in future years. If you are not required to register for GST (for example, turnover below the applicable threshold or an exempt activity), select 'Not Applicable' rather than entering an invalid or unrelated number.

Provide the business's current bank account number and IFSC code — banks increasingly cross-check this against Udyam records when assessing priority-sector lending eligibility.

  6. Select NIC Codes for Your Activities

Choose the National Industrial Classification (NIC) code(s) that best describe your primary and any secondary business activities. You can select multiple codes if your enterprise operates across manufacturing and services, or across several distinct activities.

Getting this reasonably accurate matters because certain subsidy schemes and sector-specific incentives are filtered by NIC code.

  7. Enter Investment and Turnover Figures

Provide your investment in plant & machinery or equipment (excluding land and building) and your annual turnover for the relevant financial year. The portal uses these figures, cross-checked against ITR and GST data where available, to automatically classify the enterprise as Micro, Small, or Medium.

MSME classification thresholds have been revised more than once in recent years — confirm the current investment and turnover limits displayed on the portal itself rather than relying on older figures, since an outdated assumption here can misclassify your enterprise and affect scheme eligibility.

  8. Add Employment and Additional Details

Enter the approximate number of persons employed and, if applicable, details of any existing Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum (UAM) or EM-II registration you are migrating from. Special category declarations (for example, social category of the owner, or whether the enterprise is women-led) are optional but can affect eligibility for certain targeted schemes.

  9. Review and Submit the Declaration

Carefully review every entered field against your PAN, GST, and bank records, since Udyam registration is filed as a self-declaration and errors are your responsibility to correct later through an update, not through re-registration. Once satisfied, submit the form electronically.

On successful submission, the portal generates a unique Udyam Registration Number (URN) immediately.

  10. Download and Verify Your Udyam Certificate

The Udyam Registration Certificate is typically emailed to the registered email address shortly after submission and is also available for download directly from the portal using the URN and linked mobile number.

    • Check that the enterprise name, PAN, category (Micro/Small/Medium), and activity codes on the certificate are all correct.
    • Save both the PDF certificate and the URN somewhere durable — banks, tender portals, and vendor onboarding forms will ask for both.
  11. Link Udyam to Bank and Vendor Records

Share your Udyam Registration Number with your bank, key customers, and vendor-onboarding systems so that MSME delayed-payment protections under the MSMED Act and any applicable priority-sector lending benefits are correctly recorded against your enterprise from the outset, rather than retroactively.

  12. Keep Details Updated Annually

Udyam registration itself does not expire or require renewal, but the underlying investment and turnover figures should be updated on the portal whenever they change materially, and in any case reviewed once a year against your latest financial statements so your classification (Micro/Small/Medium) stays accurate.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Entering a GSTIN when the business is not actually required to be GST-registered, which can cause verification mismatches.
  • Using outdated or estimated investment and turnover figures instead of current audited or provisional numbers for classification.
  • Registering through a third-party website that charges a fee for what is a free government process on udyamregistration.gov.in.
  • Failing to update bank account details after switching to a new business account, which can delay loan or subsidy processing.
  • Mismatched enterprise name or address between the Udyam certificate and GST/trade license records, which surfaces later during tender or loan verification.
  • Not migrating an older Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum (UAM) or EM-II registration to Udyam, resulting in loss of recognized MSME status.
  • Choosing an NIC code that only loosely matches the actual business activity, which can exclude the enterprise from sector-specific schemes.
  • Treating the Udyam certificate as a one-time filing and never revisiting it, even after turnover or investment crosses into a different classification band.

Frequently asked questions

Is Udyam registration free in India?

Yes. The government does not charge any fee for Udyam registration through the official portal, udyamregistration.gov.in. Be cautious of third-party websites or agents that charge a fee for what is a free self-service process — if you engage a professional, the fee you pay is for their assistance, not for the government filing itself.

How long does it take to get a Udyam certificate?

For most applicants with clean PAN, Aadhaar, and GST data, the Udyam Registration Number is generated instantly on submission, and the certificate is typically emailed within a day. Cases with data mismatches (for example, name discrepancies between Aadhaar and PAN) can take longer while the applicant corrects the underlying records.

Do I need to upload documents like PAN or Aadhaar proof?

No physical document uploads are required during Udyam registration. The portal validates your details through API integration with the UIDAI, Income Tax, and GST databases using OTP-based authentication, so there is no scanning or uploading step.

Can a partnership firm get Udyam registration without a GSTIN?

Yes, if the firm is not legally required to register under GST — for example, because turnover is below the applicable GST registration threshold for its category of supply. In that case, select 'Not Applicable' for the GSTIN field rather than leaving it blank or entering an unrelated number.

Is there a renewal or expiry date for Udyam registration?

No. Unlike the older MSME/Udyog Aadhaar system, Udyam registration does not expire and does not need periodic renewal. You are, however, expected to update your investment and turnover figures on the portal whenever they change materially, so your Micro/Small/Medium classification stays accurate.

What happens if my Aadhaar details don't match during registration?

If the name or details entered don't match UIDAI records, OTP generation or verification will fail. In that situation, first correct the mismatch through Aadhaar's own update channels; if the issue persists, visiting a nearby Common Service Centre (CSC) for assistance is a practical fallback before reattempting online registration.

How does Udyam registration affect my classification as Micro, Small, or Medium?

Classification is based on your investment in plant & machinery/equipment (excluding land and building) and your annual turnover, both self-declared but cross-checked against PAN and GST data over time. Because these thresholds have been revised more than once in recent years, confirm the current investment and turnover bands shown on the portal at the time you register rather than relying on figures from an older guide or article.

Can I have more than one Udyam registration for the same PAN?

Generally, one PAN corresponds to one Udyam registration covering all the enterprise's activities and locations, captured through multiple NIC codes and branch details rather than separate registrations. If you operate genuinely distinct business entities with different PANs, each would register separately.

What benefits does Udyam registration actually unlock?

Commonly cited benefits include easier access to collateral-free credit guarantee-backed loans, priority-sector lending consideration from banks, protection against delayed payments from buyers under the MSMED Act, eligibility for government tenders that reserve a portion of procurement for MSMEs, and access to various central and state subsidy or interest-subvention schemes. Eligibility criteria and scheme specifics vary and are periodically revised, so confirm current terms with the relevant scheme administrator or your CA before relying on a particular benefit.

Do exporters or service businesses also need Udyam registration?

Yes — Udyam registration is open to both manufacturing and service enterprises, including exporters, freelisted professionals operating as a business, and traders in certain cases, provided they meet the investment and turnover criteria for Micro, Small, or Medium classification. Exporters in particular should register promptly since several export-incentive and interest-subvention schemes require a valid Udyam number.

I already have an old Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum (UAM). Do I need to re-register?

Enterprises still operating on the legacy Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum or EM-II registration are expected to migrate to Udyam using their UAM number on the portal's migration path. Continuing to rely solely on an old UAM without migrating can result in the enterprise not being recognized as MSME-registered for newer scheme applications.

Can PNPC Global help with Udyam registration and ongoing MSME compliance?

Yes. While the Udyam filing itself is free and self-service, PNPC Global assists clients with reconciling investment and turnover figures against financial statements before filing, correcting classification errors, migrating legacy Udyog Aadhaar registrations, and integrating the Udyam number into banking, GST, and tender documentation as part of broader compliance support.
